For the Joy Set before Him . . . by Joseph Littlefield
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:1-2(ESV)
Jesus is the founder and perfecter of our faith. He is the initiator and finisher. He is the source and completer; the alpha and omega; the beginning and the end. And He counted the cost of His death. In full recognition of all that lay pregnant in the crucifixion: the betrayal and abandonment, the brutal torture, and painful death, the cloak of sin and shame, the violent separation from the perfect Father– He still chose its path. He considered what would be lost as small in comparison to what would be gained. He endured the cross and looked down His nose at the shame. He chose the cross knowing the back side was far greater than the front side.
He is now seated at the right hand of the Father, and will soon be joined by all He purchased by that choice.
