The Great Curse, The Greater Blessing . . . by Joseph Littlefield

The Great Curse – The Greater Blessing . . . by Joseph Littlefield

We are a people cursed by the Great Curse.  We surely have a curse of death and decay, sin and self.  As the psalmist said,

“evils have encompassed me beyond number; my iniquities have overtaken me, and I cannot see; they are more than the hairs of my head; my heart fails me.”

But we are, more so, a people blessed by the Great Blessing.  We are blessed with redemption and restoration, forgiveness and freedom.  The psalmist had a hint of this as he wrote,

“As for you, O Lord, you will not restrain your mercy from me; your steadfast love and your faithfulness will ever preserve me! …may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation say continually, ‘Great is the Lord!’”

We have a great Lord; one who has not stayed afar off, removed from us and our cursed fallen state.  No, we have a Lord who has entered this cursed world and felt its pain on a scale of infinity that our finite minds cannot even fathom.  He has become the curse hanging on a tree.

But though His heel was bruised He crushed the head of the serpent and the curse and death and decay and sin and self.  Where the curse once reigned blessing has overcome; that is why we can joyously join the psalmist in singing out,

“may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation say continually, ‘Great is the Lord!’”
