That Man was Me . . . by joe littlefield
There once was a man who was full of himself. He was selfish, undisciplined, prideful, and lazy. He was full of himself. He was judgmental, hateful, and gluttonous. He was full of himself. His thoughts, words, and actions hurt those around them. He was full of himself. He was spirally downward into greater and greater sin. His fate was more of himself. His fate was chaos. His fate was loneliness, emptiness, pain and despair. In a word, his fate was destruction.
That man is now dead. That man was crucified and buried with Christ. That man was raised to new life. That man was me.
That is the gospel; the “good news” - the greatest possible news. The man I once was is dead. He is dead. And though his ghost yet haunts me, his end is guaranteed. And the man I am now becoming is a man less full of myself; a man slowly being filled with the God of the universe.
“For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” Colossians 3:3
“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20
